Military Sealift Command(MSC)
TAO-189 John Lenthal (Tanker)

Replenishing vessels underway has always been a challenge. The US Navy has perfected this operation over decades of operation. Currently, ship to ship transfers (UNREP's, which stands for Underway Replenishments) are done at over 8 knots and seas up to 12 feet. The headings of the ships are maintained to within 0.5 degrees and may not exceed two degrees of difference.

Before going off to a more exotic foreign assignment, we practiced refueling a sister ship off the coast of the US.

The Grumman is one of our sister ships. We UNREP within 100 to 300 ft of the other ship.

Helming Tankers

The two things I recall about helming an MSC tanker was holding course to 0.5 degrees and operating astern at four knots one day.

We could unrep in 12 foot seas and probably more it was an emergency.

Once UNREP was completed, most ships pulled away at top speed with their theme song blaring and the crew on the rail. Very impressive!

I never realized the US Navy had such a great sense of humor. Can You Spot the Pirate Flags? Wow!
