Sea Stories
Sailing Vessel Principessa
2000
I owned my Newport 41s sailing vessel, Principessa, for about
10 years, three in Dallas, Texas on Lake Texoma and seven in
Marina del Rey, CA.
They say the day you buy a boat and the day you sell a boat are
the two happiest days in your life. The day I sold my
Principessa was one of the saddest. I experienced so many
things and people with her. It felt like I was selling part
of me.

It all started with the photo on the left. I couldn't imagine
buying a boat without enough headroom for me. But once I saw her
lines and the bow wave with the spinnaker, there was no other
boat to come close to her. I had to have her.
On the right is a typical Wednesday night race finish in Marina
del Rey. This night the sunset was really spectacular.

She was so elegant under full sail. We were stopped by
so many people, so many times who asked about the boat.
She was a classic.

After arrival in LA and refitting the Principessa,
one of my first
sails was with my hairdresser and her family.
We cruised Santa Monica Bay on a relatively calm day.
They are from the Ukraine. A very hard working
family that enjoyed the day on the water except for the
sea sickness.

At the time, I was a Project Director, General Manager for
Sapient, a computer consulting firm. I enjoyed taking out
people from work. Here is one of the Vice Presidents enjoying
a day on the water. No it's not Jack Nicklaus. He was so
surprised when I took time to clean the boat before taking
them to dinner.

Here are two of the new people to Sapient out for a day
on the Principessa. You can tell from their faces that
they had never experienced anything like this and were
having a blast.

Here are two more Sapient consultants practicing for an all
woman race. After a hard day's work, they decided that
the boat was a bit much for the two of them to handle.
They came away with an appreciation of what it really takes
to handle a 41 footer.

The two consultants returned with their spouses the following
weekend for a pleasure cruise. This was much more enjoyable
for them.

There is a Christmas Parade of Lights each year in Marina del
Rey. Of course, the word Christmas is not used. I entered
the parade the first two years until I found out how rude
and obnoxious the other participants were. Subsequent years
I enjoyed patrolling the parade as a US Coast Guard Auxiliarist.
